U14 Boys win 3 out of 3 to be crowned GROUP WINNERS!
The team of Jonn, Nicholas, Marton, Herbie and Zachary went to Woodbridge on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd May for the U14 Boys County Cup.
Cambs vs Suffolk: 5-1 win
On Saturday, Cambs started with Suffolk in what felt like the final as on paper Suffolk were by far the strongest team out of our 3 opponents.
It proved to be a very competitive encounter with every match going to a deciding 3rd set tiebreak. There were a couple of rain delays in crucial moments that could have halted the momentum but all four boys who played singles showed great tenacity and focus right until the end. The highlight was Jonny who came back from the losing the first set 4-0 to beat in form Daniel (Number 6 in the Country). Nicholas showed some great doubles skills partnering Zac to finish a great series of matches with a flourish.
Cambs vs Norfolk: 5-1 win
On the Saturday evening Cambs good form continued as they completed the singles against Norfolk. The courts were slippery and our boys showed great athleticism sliding around the surface to take us into Sunday with a 4-0 lead and the win in the bag. They all won in straight sets competing well and showing great professionalism throughout.
The boys turned up on Sunday with a great buzz around and morale was high. Cambs split the doubles with Marton and Zac narrowly losing 10-6 in a deciding tiebreak taking the victory to 5-1.
Cambs vs Bedfordshire: 6-0 win
On a sunny Sunday, with the same singles line up, Cambs completed the clean sweep of singles victories to take them 4-0 up going into the doubles. Herbie and Marton showed great communication to win their first doubles of the weekend. Nick and Zac made it 2/2 wins with some excellent finishing play at the net. This was a much more straightforward victory as Cambs dropped just 7 games to win 6-0 overall and complete a hattrick of wins in the group to come 1st.
Overall as my first full captaining experience I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend. The boys represented Cambridge very well not only with their tennis but with their behaviour and sportsmanship. Having just 2 losses which were very close tiebreaks over the weekend showed a very strong performance from the under 14 boys.
