The boys’ and girls’ team of Etienne Lamb, Beau Martinez-McCune, Oliver Cleary, Corey Rickards, Isabelle Barker, Manami Bowditch, Lillian Ke, Diya Menon and Bella Yin travelled to Easton College, Norwich to represent Cambridgeshire at 9 and under County Cup.
Originally it was going to be a combined boys and girls team playing 4 boys singles, 4 girls singles, 1 boys doubles, 1 girls doubles and 2 mixed doubles and all matches counting in one combined score but due to Covid restrictions the event ended as a separate boys and girls event.
The boys played in the morning and the girls in the afternoon. The players played one FAST4 set with a tiebreak at 3 games all. In the boys event first up were Bedfordshire and this proved to be the most competitive and closest match. Corey at number 4 got the team off to a great start beating his opposite number, Joshua Featherstone 4/3 (4) and then Oliver lost narrowly to Aaron Kolek 2/4. Beau at number two had a tight match against Peter Andrews and won 4/3 (5) and then in the best match of the day Etienne beat Caleb Griffith 4/2. In the doubles Etienne and Beau won a great match 4/3 (4) and Oliver and Corey narrowly lost 3/4 (4) to give Cambs a 4/2 win.
The second match against Suffolk was a much easier affair with everyone winning their singles and doubles and only dropping 2 games between them.
The final match was against the home team of Norfolk and again this was a convincing 6/0 win to ensure the team won their group. It was a great team effort with all the boys fighting really hard and thoroughly deserving their victory.

Following the boy’s success in the morning it was the turn of the girls in the afternoon and the team of Isabella Barker, Manami Bowditch, Lillian Ke, Diya Menon and Bella Lin did not disappoint with some excellent performances.
In the first match against Bedfordshire the girls won 6/0 with Isabella, Manami, Lillian and Diya all winning their singles and then Manami and Diya and Lillian and Bella winning the doubles. The closest match was Lillian and Bella’s doubles which they won 4/3 (5).
In the second match Isabelle had a tough match against the Suffolk number one and although the score was 0/4 this did not reflect some excellent play from Isabella. Manami, Lillian and Bella all won easily as did the doubles pairings of Isabella and Manami and Lillian and Bella. The overall score was a 5/1 win.
In the final match against Norfolk who only had 3 players Cambs won 4/2. Isabella lost at number 1 2/4 while Manami and Lillian won easily.
Isabella and Diya lost a close match 3/4 (5) but the team had already won.
Overall an excellent day for Cambridgeshire winning both the boys and girl’s events.
