Congratulations to our County’s 40s Ladies for winning the Inter-County Winter Corby League consisting of 8 strong Midland counties. Craig Haworth, Manager of Corby Indoor Tennis Centre, reported that “We had one of the most exciting finishes to a season we have ever had in this competition. Last year’s winners Lincs, were undefeated all year, and faced last year’s runners up Cambridgeshire. It was nip and tuck all the way, being drawn 2-2 after the first round, then 4-4 after the second round, it came down to a match tie-break shoot out. This was the first one that Cambs have been involved in since the rule was brought in a couple of years ago. Despite facing a match point down, the Cambs 1st pair of Fleur Clegg and Rachel Hill came through 13-11 to take the title, after almost 4 hours of play! A big congratulations to Captain, Caroline Thornton, Rachel Hill, Karen Cass, Fleur Clegg, Teresa Catlin, Christine, Sprowell, Emma Mills and Marketa Ullman”.

Our teams performed very well yesterday at Gosling. The girls team of Bibiana Krall, Thomasina Boothman, Olivia Kaser, Olivia Davis, Briana Locke and May Havard beat Oxfordshire 6-0; Lost 1/5 to Essex; beat Suffolk 6/0; beat Northants 4/2 in the group to finish second in the group. They then played Herts in the semi-finals and narrowly lost 4/2 and then in the third and fourth play-off beat Norfolk 6/0 to come third and they all got a bronze medal for this – all very pleased. Olivia Kaser won all her matches at number three.
The boys, who played in the afternoon then had the goal of doing better than the girls! The team of Harry Voss, Mason Harrigan, Jianzhou Mei, Arnas Simkus, Max Tjurin and Edward Leedham started off very well and beat Northants 6/0; beat Essex 5/1; beat Norfolk 6/0; beat Oxfordshire 6/0 to finish top of their group. In the semi-finals they beat Suffolk 4/2 and then lost in the final 1/5 to Herts – although there were some very close matches here. So the boys got silver. The two positions of girls and boys are then added together to give an overall team position. Obviously Herts were first winning both and then Cambs were joint second with Essex – really great effort from everyone. |
