Congratulations to Arnas, Alexi, Tintin and Ryan who came second in the Tier 2 U10 County Cup at Easton on Sunday 26 May 2019. They were narrowly beaten by Suffolk with Essex coming third and Norfolk in fourth place.
Olivia played in a grade 3 tournament in Ipswich on Sunday 26 May and narrowly lost the final to Sophia 7-4, 7-5. Well done Olivia.
On a freezing bank holiday weekend in May, the Cambs U9, U10 and U12 Boys and Girls played in the annual Lionel Cox trophy at Queenswood School.
On the Saturday, the U10’s started very well with the Boys team of Herbie, Leo and Jianzhou beating Oxfordshire convincingly 3-0 and the girls beating Suffolk 2-1, with wins from Sophie and Bibiana. The U12’s had a tough start with the boys losing a competitive match with Hertfordshire, Jonny and Sam both pushing their opponents all the way and the girls losing to a very strong Oxfordshire team. In the second round, the U10’s then both lost very close matches, the boys to Hertfordshire despite a good win for Herbie and Leo coming very close in a 3rd set and the girls lost to Essex, with Bibiana just losing 12-10 in a match tiebreak and playing extremely well! The U9 girls played their entire tournament on the Saturday and the team of Oliva, Olivia and May played superbly beating Northants, Bucks and Oxfordshire and only losing narrowly to Essex 2-1 with both losses coming in close 3 set matches. They went into the playoff for 3rd / 4th against Suffolk and won convincingly 3-0 so a great result! Sunday started superbly for the U12’s, with wins for Jonny and Ryan to help the boys beat Suffolk followed by a 3-0 win against Norfolk. The U12 girls then beat Berkshire 2-1 with good wins from Florence and Millie. Rezi, Daisy and Millie then beat Bedfordshire. The U10 boys had a tough match with Suffolk, Herbie won at number 1 again and Leo again came very close in a great 3 set match but Cambs unfortunately lost 2-1. The U10 girls played superbly to beat Northants then Sophie came back from a set down to help secure a win against Buckinghamshire after another win from Bibiana. The U9 boys played their entire event on the Sunday, with the team of Harry, Arnas and Mason winning their group, beating Essex and Suffolk along the way and playing some excellent tennis. The final was incredibly close, with Harry losing 8-6 in the 3rd set and Mason winning which meant the boys came an excellent 2nd. In the playoffs then, the U12 boys started and beat Berkshire 3-0 to come an excellent 3rd overall. The U10 boys lost their 5th / 6th playoff to Essex to come 6th. The U10 girls played a superb playoff, with Bibiana, Sophie and Thomasina all winning to beat Berkshire 3-0 and come 3rd overall. The U12 girls finished very strongly with Daisy and Florence winning their matches to give Cambs a deserved 5th place overall. All the final positions are then totalled up between the 10 counties and Cambridgeshire came joint 2nd with Essex, with Hertfordshire the winners! The last time we won the 2nd place trophy was 30 years ago, so a great achievement by all the teams! We are very pleased to congratulate our Cambridgeshire county tennis player, David Mills, Captain of our 35s and 45s Men’s county teams, who was selected to represent England to play no.1 singles player for the Men’s 50s England team. The Four Nations Tennis Championships consisted of 6 teams per Nation of 3 Men’s and 3 Ladies age groups of 35s, 45s & 50s from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. David also had the honour of being asked to captain the overall England Team which was successful in winning the competition. On a personal level, David beat the Welsh and Scottish no.1 singles players (before picking up an injury against the Irish no.1) giving very valuable winning points towards the overall total wins for England.
The girls’ team of Isabelle, Weiqi, Sophie, Marennah and Gabby travelled daily to Grantham for 14 and under County Cup over the bank holiday weekend 4th to 6th May.
They played in a box with Lincolnshire and Buckinghamshire with the other Counties in the group being Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and South of Scotland. On the Saturday they only played doubles against Lincolnshire. With conditions very windy and quite cold the first pair of Isabelle and Weiqi narrowly lost to Ruby and Christie 6/4, 3/6, 6-10 after playing themselves into a good position at a set and 3/0 up. The second pairing of Marennah and Sophie lost 3/6, 3/6 to Alice and Isabel. On the Sunday they then finished off the match against Lincolnshire. Marennah lost 0/6, 2/6 to Ruby; Sophie lost 6/1, 2/6, 7-10 to Isabel – really tough match and then Alice beat Weiqi 6/2, 6/1. Isabelle played a great match to beat Christie 7/6, 6/4 but overall Cambridgeshire lost disappointingly 1/5 to Lincolnshire. After this set back the girls played much better in the second match against Buckinghamshire. Gabby got the team off to a great start beating Ashni 6/3, 6/3. Sophie then came back from match points down in the deciding tie break to beat Annabel 6/3, 6/7, 12-10. Weiqi lost to Aneka 1/6, 2/6 and then Isabelle won her second singles beating Millie 2/6, 6/2, 10-6. Cambs were 3/1 up going into the doubles. Marennah and Gabby combined very well to beat Annabel and Yi-Toong 6/1, 7/5. In the top doubles Isabelle and Weiqi had a very close match with Millie and Aneka just losing 5/7, 7/5 and 5-10 in the tiebreak. Overall Cambs had a 4-2 win. This meant each County had one win but on rubbers Cambs finished third. On the Monday Cambs then had to play South of Scotland for 5th and 6th position. Gabby won easily at number four beating Natasha 6/1, 6/0. This was followed by Sophie beating Alisa 7/5, 6/1. Weiqi then got her first won of the weekend beating Felicity 6/4, 6/2 and Isabelle won her third singles beating Annique 6/2, 6/1 to round of a good morning. In the doubles Marennah and Gabby won 6/2, 6/1 and Isabelle and Weiqi 6/1, 6/0 for the team to finish with a 6-0 win. Pride of place goes to Isabelle with 3 singles wins and Gabby winning four out of four matches but everyone contributed to some good tennis and had the team started better they may have been playing for first and second. All but one of the team can play next year so onwards and upwards! |
