The 2016 12 counties U16 championships saw the Cambridgeshire teams in division 2A up against Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire.

The Cambridgeshire girls team of Kira Reuter, Aisha Brown, Megan Carmihael and Charlotte Laing were up first against Nottinghamshire. The girls had an emphatic win 4 rubbers to 0, Kira at 1 beating Amelia Rajecki 4-0 4-0, Megan at 3 getting the better of Jessica Spencer 4-2 4-0, Charlotte at 4 beating Jasmine Ramadan 4-0 4-2, and Aisha at 2 having the toughest match getting the better of Anna Kirk 5-3 5-3.
Up next was Oxfordshire, and another 4-0 win! Kira took out Chloe Elliott 4-1, 4-0, Aisha battled though a tiebreak first set to win 5-4 4-0 against Jasmine Conway, Megan toughed it out to beat Annabelle Denley 4-2 5-3 and Charlotte got the win against Kyla Hawkins 4-0 4-1.

The final match was against Hertfordshire and the toughest tie of the day. Unfortunately Kira had to pull out during a very high standard and well played match against Joanna Garland due to knee pain, but fought well. Aisha got the first win on the board with yet another closely contested match, this time against Mineli Cooray 5-4 4-2. Megan has a very strong opponent in Rachel Cranley but couldn’t quite get the right side of some very close games, eventually losing out 4-0 4-1.

The final match saw Charlotte fight back from a set down to play some stunning defensive and attacking tennis to win 3-5 4-2 10-2. This meant the match was at 2-2 in rubbers but the girls were just pipped by Herts as they won 1 more set in the tie. So the girls came 2nd overall on the day.

In the other results, Hertfordshire beat Oxfordshire 3-1 and Nottinghamshire 3-1. Oxfordshire and Nottinghamshire finished at 2-2.

The Cambridgeshire boys team of Alex Wardley, Vincent Chen, Zach Cox and Charlie Taylor, started up against Nottinghamshire. Much like the girls, they raced through the tie winning 4 rubbers to 0. Alex at 1 beat Joel Hemmings 4-1 4-1, Vincent at 2 won through against Gabriel Johnson also 4-1 4-1, Zach at 3 took out Jack McLachlan 4-0 4-2 and Charlie brought the team home at 4 with a 4-0 4-0 win over Costi Nita.

Up next was Oxfordshire and another solid 4-0 win for the boys. Alex, Vincent and Charlie all won through fairly comfortably 4-0 4-1, 4-1 4-1 and 4-2 4-0 respectively. Zach had a tougher match but keeping good focus and determination turned it around to win 3-5 4-2 11-9.

The last tie of the day was a tough match against Hertfordshire. Alex had to come from a set down to beat David Latter 1-4 5-4 10-8, Vincent took out Joel Pierleoni 4-2 5-4 and Zach was very impressive against Alex Watts winning 4-1 4-1. Charlie put up a brave effort getting all the way back to match point up before finally succumbing to James Weller 4-0 4-5 12-10.

In the other results Hertfordshire beat Oxfordshire 3-1 and Nottinghamshire 3-1. Oxfordshire beat Nottinghamshire 3-1 so this meant the boys finished top of the group!
